When I moved to Charlotte, I became intrigued by the story of the city’s namesake, Queen Charlotte. I was especially drawn to the story of her African ancestry and the connection many people feel to her through it. A portrait by Sir Allan Ramsay shows a young Charlotte beside her crown. I imagined a different moment: a confident young queen wearing it. Queen of the City is my interpretation of a woman claiming her place and power.
